I have decided to dedicate a post on Thursday to therapy, and offer you the many tips I have learned on the couch. They will be a good reminder for me, as well, of something small I can concentrate on. Many of them are published in my book, “The Pocket Therapist: An Emotional Survival Kit.”
“This being human is a guest-house,” wrote the 13th century Sufi poet, Rumi. “Every morning a new arrival, a joy, a depression, a meanness …Welcome and entertain them all!”
I love that.
Because you can always kick them out!
Let’s say feelings are like any other visitors in that, like fish, they smell after three days. You welcome them, set out a cheese plate, learn a thing or two from them—like from which neighborhood of your brain they come from … the childhood-scars region, the obsessive-compulsive vicinity, or the paranoia district–and then after a night or two, you tell them to hit the road.
It’s a win-win situation!

Yes … what a great post! It seems counter-intuitive to welcome that which we wish were not present and yet, maybe this is how we can get to know ourselves better. The truth is, these feelings come whether we welcome them or not, so maybe it can take some of the sting out. I have used this principle and will continue to use it in the future as I remember it for the tool it is.

Mrs. Borchard – I just want to say how much I absolutly LOVED your pocket therapist book. I read it in one after noon and found myself taking notes and underlining like I was back in Grad School. It is fully that I had thought if I was to write a book it would have ahd a very similar concept but you did a billion times better than I ever could. You’re and inspiration to all of us out in their who are always in our heads and you were the first to wirte about how much these illnesses suck while offering help and hope and inspiration and a light at the end of the tunnel. If I beleved in God I’d say God Bless You, so I guess I’ll just say how apprecaitve I am for your contribution. Thank you…
