If the Court strikes down the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) today, then I for one am not too worried, even though I’m a liberal supporter of the bill and the President. The reason is simple: it will be proof that compromise with the Republicans is not possible and that it is time for Medicare for All.
Remember – the Republicans were for the individual mandate before they were against it. And a decision today by the Court against Obamacare on that basis will just be the latest in a string of decisions starting with Bush v Gore in 2000 to Citizens United last year that have sullied the honor of the Supreme Court itself.
There simply is no other way to go, since covering America’s millions of uninsured is a humanitarian priority (and the current status quo, where millions of families are a layoff away from losing coverage, is simply unsustainable).
