Just returned from an amazing weekend with mothers and teen daughters at THE GREAT ESCAPE conference at Sandy Cove Conference Center in North East Maryland. I spoke on the topic of my latest book, I Love My Mother But…And while we know that mothers are not perfect, we also know that daughters often expect them to be.
So the focus of this retreat was helping teens and moms strengthen the bond and work on relationship repair when needed. We began with team building exercises that worked us through paying attention to change, learning how to be separate but attached, work through difficulty together and build trust. Then we talked about the common mistakes teens and moms make in their relationships and learned how to effect change. Finally we wrapped it all up by understanding the path that leads to distance in relationships and the path that brings us together.
Thanks to all the moms and teens who came and participated. If you needed to feel hopeful about today’s youth, this was an event that would have restored that hope! And thanks to my teen daughter for leading us in worship through dance.
If you would like help strengthening your mother-daughter relationship, check out my book, I Love My Mother But…(see link on the right)

I’m 40 years old now and unfortunately the relationship between my mother and myself suffered many setbacks, especially in the early years, that have brought us to a standstill. There is no trust between us and I’m not sure there ever will be. I’ve tried as many ways as have been presented to me including acting just like she has over the years. And as far as I can tell, her actions are more to do with what someone else did than what I did. Just don’t know how to get past the road blocks and I and thinking of just letting go of the relationship all together.

Dr. Linda,
I was also at the Sandy Cove Mother/Teen daughter getaway, and I learned so many valuable tools that I plan on using for years to come! Thank you for a wonderful weekend of teaching and team building!
