posted by Nell Minow

Be sure to check out this year’s Hollywood issue of the New York Times Magazine this weekend.  Some of the year’s biggest stars try out some iconic roles in a series of photographs and short films.  Brad Pitt is Eraserhead.  [...]

I loved the original Happy Feet, but five years later only liked this sequel.  It’s still a lot of fun to see dancing, singing penguins, but the meandering storyline never catches hold. In the original, a small Emperor penguin named [...]

Brad Pitt is underrated as an actor.  But he is the best there is when it comes to calibrating the deployment of his onscreen star power, which he uses as expertly as Meryl Streep does accents.  Pitt can dial it [...]

Fall Movies 2011 — Miss Piggy, Double Clooneys, Spaceys, and Lautners, the First Silent Film in 80 Years, and Brad Pitt Plays Ball

posted by Nell Minow

Summer is time for superheroes, remakes, raunchy comedies, and sequels.  As the leaves begin to fall, movies get a little more ambitious, a little edgier, a little weightier, with less CGI and a bit more depth.  But that doesn’t mean [...]

Behind the Candelabra: The Real Story of Liberace and Scott Thorson
Behind the Candelabra premieres this weekend on HBO.  It is based on the hard to believe but true story of one of the most popular and flamboyant stars of the 1950's and 60's, who went by just one name: Liberace. Wladziu Valentino Libe

Movies to Pay Tribute to Our Military
In honor of Memorial Day, take a break from picnics and sales and share one of these great films about American soldiers, sailors, and Marines. And be sure to take time thank the military and veterans in your life for all they have done to keep us safe and free. 1. Sergeant York Gary Cooper won

Fast & Furious 6
The storylines of the "Fast and Furious" franchise may be preposterous, but what's even harder to believe is that, contrary to the history of just about every other multi-sequel series and what I thought were the laws of nature, these keep getting better. There's something of a pattern at this point

What Maisie Knew
She has the face of a flower and she still believes that the world is an enchanted place that cannot hurt her.  She does not understand what is going on around her, but we do. Her name is Maisie (the exquisite Onata Aprile).  She is seven and she lives in New York with her parents, a fading roc

Interview: Scott McGehee and David Siegel of "What Maisie Knew"
"What Maisie Knew" is a touching, beautifully acted new movie starring Julianne Moore and Steve Coogan as a couple breaking up but the story is seen through the eyes of their little girl.  I spoke to the directors, Scott McGehee and David Siegel, about the film.  Remarkably, though it is set in th
