Dr. Ananthi Jebasingh was not looking to start a school for children living in the slums of India.
It wasn’t until a boy knocked at her door that her amazing journey began. First it was just one boy, then another, and another, and another.
Soon her garage had become a makeshift classroom with new students asking for “admission” to her “school” each day.
Ananthi went to the commissioner for the slum neighborhood to ask for help. And she was told that she could receive a small room located in a public toilet complex to teach the children.
Was this a joke?
Ananthi describes the public toilet complex as being completely disgusting. You could smell the terrible stench from a kilometer away as it was used by thousands of people.
And this slum commissioner thought this was a place where kids could go to school?
Not to mention that it is not a place for a professional woman to spend her day. Imagine teaching a classroom of children in those conditions.
Ananthi describes what happens next as the “manger scene crossing her mind like a film.” And her heart says that if Jesus can be born in a manger–then she can not only enter a toilet complex, but use it to teach children.
